The Lisbon Zoo has been collaborating with the Komodo National Park in Indonesia since 1998, and in the conservation of the Natural Reserve Wae Wuul since 2005, on the island of Flores, through a program of in situ conservation of the Komodo dragon, coordinated by the Rotterdam Zoo, which has the support of all European zoos that include this species in their collection.

This species, considered extinct in the wild since 1972, is also the focus of the joint work being developed towards its conservation and, in 1982, the first Arabian oryx was released in Oman. In 2003, the Lisbon Zoo sent two females of this species for the Al Wabra Wildlife Preservation, in Qatar, a protected area included in their natural habitat and origin of distribution.

In 2006, the Lisbon Zoo sent a technician to participate in a demographic study of one of the most threatened subspecies of the Sumatran rhino: Dicerorhinos sumatrensis harrissoni, in the Tabin Wildlife Reserve, in Borneo, Indonesia. This in situ conservation initiative was developed in the context of the EAZA Campaign SOS Rhino;

Since 2013, in cooperation with the Russian authorities, WWF Russia, and through the EAZA, Zoo has been collaborating and coordinating the Persian leopard reintroduction program of in the Caucasus, Russia. In October 2013, it sent a breeding couple for the Centre for Reproduction and Reintroduction of the Sochi Natural Park, in Russia, with the aim of reintroducing the offspring in their natural habitat. In addition, technical support is provided by the Lisbon Zoo’s specialized staff, including participation in the EAZA Advisory Committee for the Reintroduction of Persian Leopards. Vitória (“Victory”), the cub born of the couple of Persian leopards sent by the Lisbon Zoo to the Centre for Reproduction and Reintroduction of Leopards, in Russia, has already been reintroduced in its natural habitat.

In 1997, in partnership with the National Zootechnical Station, the Lisbon Zoo carried out the first artificial insemination of a Siberian tiger female – one of the only such success cases in Europe.
