Persian leopard (Panthera pardus saxicolor)
Since 2013, in cooperation with the Russian authorities, WWF Russia, and through the EAZA, Zoo has been collaborating and coordinating the Persian leopard reintroduction program of in the Caucasus, Russia. In October 2013, it sent a breeding couple for the Centre for Reproduction and Reintroduction of the Sochi Natural Park, in Russia, with the aim of reintroducing the offspring in their natural habitat. In addition, technical support is provided by the Lisbon Zoo’s specialized staff, including participation in the EAZA Advisory Committee for the Reintroduction of Persian Leopards. Vitória (“Victory”), the cub born of the couple of Persian leopards sent by the Lisbon Zoo to the Centre for Reproduction and Reintroduction of Leopards, in Russia, has already been reintroduced in its natural habitat.
